JasonWhitefeather

Hands Oeff left his home in Austria at the age of 16, the time was the early 1800s. Along with his German shepherd Heidi, he headed west. His westward journey eventually brought him to Canadian shores and the city of Montreal. Here, he meets a Frenchman, Monsieur Dadier. Under M. Dadier's tutelage, Hands becomes a true Coureur du bois, a North American Woodsman. Large by any standards, Hans becomes known as White Bear by the native peoples.

Tragedy drives him from Montreal and west once again. He travels across the great plains of the Sioux and buffalo to the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains into what was the become Montana. As civilization encroaches and Hans grows older, he opens a Merchantile to provide goods for the growing population.

A young reporter for the Chicago Tribune has been assigned the project of writing articles on old Mountain Men who have gone unreported. His first assignment is to cover the life of Hands Off, one of the many names this man was called.
